Volcano Mahameru Eruption in Indonesia Prompts Emergency Relocations

The nation's Mount Semeru, the highest peak on the island of Java, has exploded, blanketing multiple communities with falling ash, leading to evacuations and leading authorities to raise the alert to the highest level.

The mountain in the province of East Java unleashed blistering plumes of hot ash and a mixture of rock, lava and gas that travelled up to 4 miles down its sides multiple times from noon to evening, while a thick column of fiery clouds rose 1.2 miles into the sky, as stated by Indonesia’s Geology Agency.

The outbursts that occurred throughout the day compelled authorities to raise the volcano’s alert level on two occasions, from the level three to the top level, the authority reported. No deaths or injuries have been reported.

More than 300 inhabitants in the three villages most at risk in the area of Lumajang were evacuated to government shelters, according to a representative for the national disaster mitigation agency.

He said that increased activity of the volcano on the afternoon of Wednesday led authorities to expand the hazard area to 5 miles from the summit. Residents were advised to stay clear from an zone along the Kobokan River, which is the path of the lava flow, as scorching gases moved down the volcano's sides.

Footage on social media showed a thick plume of ash moving through a forested valley to a waterway beneath a overpass. Residents, some with faces covered with volcanic dust and rain, escaped to makeshift refuges or left for alternative secure locations.

Regional news outlets indicated that authorities were facing challenges to rescue about 178 individuals trapped on the 12,060-foot mountain at the Ranu Kumbolo monitoring post. The party comprised 137 hikers, 15 carriers, seven escorts and six travel representatives, according to an spokesperson with the national park.

“They are currently safe at the Ranu Kumbolo station,” an official stated in a recorded message. He said the station was situated 2.8 miles from the crater on the northern slope of the volcano, which is outside the trajectory of the fiery cloud movement that was observed moving to the south-southeast. Inclement conditions and precipitation required the group to remain overnight there, he added.

The volcano, also known as Mahameru, has erupted many occasions in the past 200 years. Still, as is the situation with many of the 129 live volcanoes in the archipelago, tens of thousands of people continue to reside on its fertile slopes.

Semeru’s previous significant explosion was in late 2021, when 51 people were lost their lives and hundreds others were burned and settlements were buried in layers of mud. The eruption led to the evacuation of over ten thousand people from their homes.

Indonesia, an island chain of over 280 million inhabitants, sits along the Pacific “ring of fire”, a curved series of tectonic boundaries, and is prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity.
