Ultra-Conservative Ex- Lawmaker José Antonio Kast Elected as Chile Incoming Leader.
In a decisive second-round vote, hardline figure José Antonio Kast has secured the presidential office in Chile.
A Commanding Victory
With over 99% of ballots counted, Kast secured 58.17% of the vote, beating leftist contender Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.
This represents Kast's third presidency, having previously been defeated by the incumbent president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 second round.
Campaign Focused On Law and Order and Immigration
Recognized for his unwavering socially conservative views and praise for the era of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's platform was primarily centered on promises to combat growing violence and significantly curb immigration.
He repeatedly cited immigrants, notably the approximately 330,000 illegal individuals in Chile, for public safety problems. During the election cycle, he issued an ultimatum for them to exit before the inauguration or face removal.
His plans featured Trump-inspired measures such as erecting holding facilities, border walls, perimeter fencing, and strengthening the army presence on the northernmost frontier.
Part of a Continental Wave
Several analysts interpret Kast's win as part of a wider right-wing wave in the region, similar to this year's electoral wins in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
Nevertheless, other pundits further describe it as a continuation of the regular swing of power between left-wing and right governments since Chile's transition to democracy in 1990.
Governing Lacking a Clear Mandate
Despite his sweeping electoral victory, Kast will not hold an absolute majority in parliament, not in the Chamber of Deputies nor the Senate, even when various rightwing parties are counted together.
This legislative reality may hinder his plans, such as a vow to slash public spending by billions within a year and a half—a measure for which he has not provided specifics.
"There are numerous questions about how a Kast presidency will look like that are uncertain because he has not detailed the way he will do them," noted a political science professor.
The analyst added, "On the economy, it is highly probable we will see spending cuts common for the right-wing. But the area with much less doubt is on public safety, because that has been his workhorse across the campaign."
