The network's Top Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Significant Renewal for Two More Seasons.
Last October, Adult Swim saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the channel launched a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a animated take of a serene talk show. At a time often characterized by bleakness, this show's earnestness found an audience and helped it become a breakout hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."
A President's Endorsement
The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky sensibility.
"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about watching this charming family go about their everyday routines.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his hope to help comedy break out of its prevailing sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
The Path Forward
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well be part of that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to enjoy the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
