While Europe cleaves ever tighter to Ukraine facing persistent threats of U.S. withdrawal, the danger is that Trump has constructed a rationale for not listening to his allies.

This situation demands a firm reaction from European leadership. While some figures, such as Germany's leader, have been forceful in their rebuttals, including British officials—have continued with a policy of seeking to placate the White House.

On Tuesday, a Downing Street spokesperson refused to criticize the president's remarks about Europe or his renewed attack on the mayor of London.

They said, "The Prime Minister enjoys a productive partnership with the American leader and a strong relationship with the Mayor of London, and is committed to working with both to deliver stronger results for the British public."

The stark reality is that Trump means his words and repeats what he means repeatedly. It is past time to abandon the pretense otherwise.
