Billionaire investor Isaacman has been voted in as the next chief of NASA, ending an atypical confirmation journey where the President nominated him, withdrew it, and then put him forward again.

Isaacman, an aviation enthusiast who was the first civilian to undertake a extravehicular activity, is also the first NASA administrator in a generation to come directly from outside public service.

For numerous observers, the legacy of his leadership will be determined by one pivotal challenge: whether it can land people to the lunar surface ahead of China.

Trump has emphasized a desire for the United States to build a sustained presence on the moon, both to facilitate harvesting materials and to serve as a launching pad for missions to the Red Planet.

Confirmation Vote and Political Dynamics

On This week, the Senate confirmed Isaacman's nomination with a decisive vote.

The President initially pulled the nomination in the spring, pointing to a "comprehensive examination of prior associations".

At the point, the president was publicly feuding with tech billionaire Musk, one of his largest political donors, with whom the nominee has professional ties.

The new administrator has stated he is now aligned with the administration's goal to harvest the moon, placing him in disagreement with Musk, who has said that lunar missions is a diversion from the journey to reaching Mars.

Strategic Plan

In the ongoing space battle, countries are racing to exploit the moon's resources.

“Now is not the time for delay but a time for decisive steps because if we lag, if we make a mistake, we may never catch up, and the implications could alter the balance of power here on Earth,” he told lawmakers during his hearing.

The business leader sees bringing in more commercial rivalry as key to achieving those goals, according to a recently leaked paper detailing his strategy for the agency.

In his testimony, he reaffirmed the strategy, which he developed when he was initially selected, but clarified it was a work in progress.

His support for multiple providers could also lead to tension with SpaceX. Recently, Isaacman praised the granting of a major contract to Jeff Bezos's company, which is one of the main challengers of SpaceX.

In the document, he recommended the agency should expand collaboration with research institutes, positioning the agency as a "force multiplier for scientific discovery".

He highlighted the planned deployment of the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope as a cornerstone project.

"Should we be approaching something groundbreaking - like launching Roman - I will explore every option to see it launched, even using my own resources if that's what it requires to deliver the science," he wrote.

Wealth and Career

According to estimates, his wealth is pegged at approximately $1.2bn, accumulated through his payment processing company and the sale of his business that provided flight training and operated a private fleet of military jets.

The NASA administrator role will be his first job in politics, a contrast to the last two people appointed as head of the agency.

He will succeed the former transportation secretary, who has been the interim NASA chief since the summer.
